Final Groups

The Portsmouth Music Scene
1970s to 1990's PORTSMOUTH GROUPS & MUSICIANS

There may be gaps, missing names and no doubt mistakes - we would welcome further contributions to improve the record.
“Groups” refers specifically to those playing pop, beat, rhythm & blues, soul and rock music, broadly utilising amplified guitars and drums plus in some cases, other instruments.
Our aim is to include any group from/based in the Portsmouth area that made at least one public performance.

Mick Cooper (cooper_m6@sky.com) & Dave Allen (dave.allen@port.ac.uk)

An A to Z of some of Portsmouth bands who recorded and gigged between 1977 and 1996.

Gilbey Twiss

Dave Allen vocals /harmonica, Deny Barnes guitar, Bernie Fox drums, Mick Legg bass guitar, Mick Tuck alto/tenor saxophones.
The tale of Gilbey Twiss. Mick Legg and Dave Allen from Rosemary had joined Whiskey River's blues players Bernie Fox and Denny Barnes plus saxophonist Mick Tuck from Wanted. We were managed by Mick Dillon and Alan Roblin and after flirting with the name the Teen Queens became Gilbey Twiss (why? no idea). Their first gig was a Press Charity event at the Locarno in Arundel Street on Tuesday 6 October 1970 with other Pompey bands Aubrey Small and Egypt plus Dozy Beaky Mick & Tich. After their spot we packed up and drove to the Pier, for a student gig following Jellybread, Bram Stoker and the Edgar Broughton Band as last act of the night. For the two gigs combined they earned £15!
They used to rehearse upstairs at the notorious Appletree pub on the Hard and played a couple of gigs there in exchange. Other gigs came at the Teachers' College (Milton), the Oasis, the Pomme D'Or and after the Tricorn gigs, played Oaklands Convent with (In Grandma's) Absence on Friday 12 February. Shortly after, Denny Barnes left to join Sam Apple Pie, a London recording blues band and after 11 gigs in four months GT was no more. Last heard of, Denny is now in New Zealand, Mick Legg is on IOW and Bernie still gigs locally with all kinds of people including Steve Roux. Mick Tuck died some years ago. Dave Allen trained as a teacher and later became a university lecturer and spent more time around the folk scene and joined Steel Mill no drums and bass but lots of violinists, accordionists, banjos, dobros, washboards etc. Briefly they also had a 'girl' singer - Sue Humphries. They earned an average of £11 per gig which was crazy. Dave Allen - vocals - harmonica, Deny Barnes - guitar, Bernie Fox - drums, Mick Legg - bass guitar, Mick Tuck - alto/tenor saxophones, Mick Dillon - Personal Manager, Fareham.

Think we made maybe 35 pounds a night in there. and then,... The Steve Gould Band lineup changed in the late 70's, The Bassist, Peter Collins left to join The Paul K Jones Band and Paul Emery left to join a rock n roll band. Brian Picton, originally playing Rhythm guitar switch to Bass, Michael Collins joined the band as Rhythm/lead Guitar and Grahame Jackson joined on Drums. The band went on to perform all along the south coast, and notably at Cardiff University, South Parade Pier and also a summer season at the Royal Lodge directly opposite South Parade Pier. The Steve Gould Band disbanded late 1979 and formed a Punk Band known as FIIK. The orginal line up of this band featured in the Portsmouth Evening News , left to right, top to bottom was: Grahame Jackson, Brian Picton (Bass), Michael Collins(Rhythm/lead), Neil Dixon (Vocals), Nigel Collins (Rhythm/lead), Later Nigel Collins left the band to join the Bath based Snake in the Grass and was replaced by Andy Thomas on Sax.
