Meet the Rock Groups - No 8 in the series
Lessons to keep in fine form

Leader of an 18 month old rock'n'roll group, Johnnie and the Cutters, is John Coates, a 20 year old joiner, of 5, Inverness Road, Buckland, Portsmouth. John Coates a 20 year-old joiner of 5, Inverness Road Buckland, Portsmouth. His group has five members. three guitists, a drunimer and a vocalist.
John, who plays drums, said he still had lessons in drumming so that he could keep in tip-top form. All the Cuttters can read music and one passed in music in the General Certificate of Education.
Lead guitar is played by Ted Thorne (19).of 8, Gruneisen Road Stamshaw. A shipwright apppretice in Portsmouth Dockyard, 19 year-old Mick Reeve, of 35, Lynn Road Copnor is rhythm guitarist and bass guitar is played by Brian Deluchi (19) a car machanic, of 191, Queen Street, Portsea.
The vocalist is Dennis Gates (22) a painter of 14, Clanfield House, Lake Road Portsmouth Except for the vocalist the Cutters all wear lilac jackets with lilac satin collars, black trousers, black bow ties, black shoes and white shirts. Dennis's only difference in uniform is is that he has a black satin collar to his jacket.
All of the group have had previous experience playing in rock'n'roll groups. They have about £300 worth of equipment and practise. every Wednesday night. John explained that the Cutters were started by, himself, Ted and Dennis. Mick and Brian joined later.
One of our specialities is that we give rock'n roll versions of some favourite old love tunes, said John.
