Michael John "Mike" Hug born 11 August 1942 play drums, vibraphone, vocals, keyboards, songwriter a founding member of the 1960s group Manfred Mann.
His parents condoned his jazz drumming as long as he continued his piano lessons. He met Manfred Mann while serving as a musician at Butlin's Clacton in 1962 and they formed a seven-piece group. The Mann-Hugg Blues Brothers recruited Paul Jones and later Tom McGuinness. On signing with HMV Records their producer, John Burgess, changed their name to Manfred Mann.
He and his brother composed "Mister, You're a Better Man Than I" which was recorded by the Yardbirds in 1965. Hug also composed the majority of the songs for the 1968 Paramount film Up the Junction and wrote incidental music to a BBC Wednesday Play. He co-wrote the theme music to the BBC TV comedy series, Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads in 1972.
Today, apart from his role as keyboard player with the Manfreds, a reformed version of the '60s band (without Manfred Mann) who tour the UK and Europe regularly, Hugg is part of the jazz trio, PBD.

Hug the Jeweller - a Gosport family jeweller since 1890.
It started when William J Hug the son of a Swiss immigrant began supplying goods and services to the Navy in Portsmouth.
He promptly found premises at 82 High Street, Gosport to serve the local community and deal with Naval contracts to repair
and service ships' chronometers, clocks and barometers.
The move to the present location, 90 High Street, occurred when Woolworths bought out ‘82’ for their then new store. Later
there were branches in Stoke Road Gosport, West Street Fareham and Ventnor Isle of Wight.
The business was taken over by two of his sons, Denis and Richard, followed by
their sons Brian and Nicholas (Nick).
Brian's elder brother Mike worked briefly in the workshop before leaving to follow his passion for music and formed the pop
group Manfred Mann......now still performing as THE MANFREDS he also works with Brian
on songwriting and recording projects.
Brian now runs the new business Hug-the-Jeweller Ltd. operating from 90 High Street, Gosport.
