First meeting of the Portsmouth Music Club

1944

January 17th Irene Scharrer gave the first of a series of piano concerts at the Kings Theatre for the Portsmouth Music Club.
August 30th The Portsmouth Music Club give a classical concert with Helen Hoskin (contralto).

1945

July 1st Vocal, Pianoforte, and oboe music was given at the Southsea Music Club.
September 23rd The Southsea Music Club give a programme of pianoforte duets and vocal music.
October 7th A programme of madrigals was given at the Portsmouth Music Club by the St Cecilia Singers who are Joan Reynolds, Dorothy Wassell, John Ellison and Reginald Wassell.
November 7th The Northern Music Club is formed in Portsmouth to produce a light orchestra of at least 25 members, as well as a rhythm section and an accordion band, secretary Mr. R. Perkins, 30 Fearon Road.
December 15th, Saturday, The Portsmouth Music Club at 73a Victoria Road South present a programme including the Moonlight Sonata.

1946

February 12th The fourth Anniversary of the Southsea Music Club was celebrated with a concert given by Ethel Humpfries(Pianoforte) and Aisleen Standish(Soprano).
March 10th The Portsmouth Male Voice Choir perform at the Portsmouth Music Club.
May 5th A programme of pianoforte, violin, vocal music and elocution was given at the Music Club.

1947

July 1st The Stuart String Players play for the Music Club at Southsea.

1948

June 12th Saturday, The Portsmouth Music Club now hold their meetings at the Central Public Library meeting room.

1949

February 5th The Music Club meet at the Central Public Library for their 7th anniversary meeting.
February 24th The Portsmouth Music Club give a recital at St Phillips Church Cosham, singers were, Joy Lineham, Frank Morley and Thomas Smooker(violin).
March 19th The St Cecelia Singers and Reg Wassell give a recital entitled 'Shakespear and the song' to the Portsmouth Music club.
December 12th The Portsmouth Music Club, founded in 1942, have celebrated their 200th meeting.

1950

March 6th The Portsmouth Music Club get a lecture, Bach the man and the music, by John Grayson.
April 29th The Portsmouth Music Club's first musical 'Have a go' takes place!
August 7th A program of light music is presented by the Entracte Players at the Portsmouth Music Club.
August 21st A program of music by the winners of the Portsmouth and IOW Music Festival was presented to the Portsmouth Music Club.

1951

April 16th The Lyric Quintet, Jean Casey, Marie Scholley, Connie Goble, Keith Casey and Alfred Corbett, sing to the Portsmouth Music Club.
August 8th The Portsmouth Music Club meet at the Central Library lecture hall for a program of classical music.
November 27th A section of the Portsmouth Glee Club, conductor Harold Hall, entertained at the Portsmouth Music Club.

1952

March 17th The Entr'acte Players, directed by violinist Ivor Croker, entertain at the Portsmouth Music Club at the Central Library.
September 29th The Peter Stuart Quartet play at the Portsmouth Music Lover's Club meeting at the Wesley Central Hall, Fratton Road.
November 12th Paulsgrove Ladies Choir sing at the Music Lovers Club at the Wesley Central Hall.
November 24th The St Cecelia Singers perform at the Portsmouth Music Club. They are Reg and Dorothy Wassell, Joan Reynolds, Florence Brice, and John Ellison.
November 27th Ernest Wyatt of Queens Road are now running an L.P. Record Club.

1953

February 14th Saturday, The Music Club, founder 1942, celebrate their Eleventh Anniversary at the Lecture Hall, at the Central Library behind the Guildhall with a concert.
March 21st The Portsmouth Music club meet at the Public Library to hear the St Andrews Singers and others in concert.
April 27th The Portsmouth Music club meet for a program called "Music at Lilac Time", those involved were Phyllis Tipple, Dorothy Buckle, Patrick Collins, Francis Deacon, Gladys Cartwright and Marjorie Buckle.
June 22nd At the lecture hall of the central Public Library, the Portsmouth Music Club were entertained by the Gosport Ladies Choir, conducted by Mrs. Diaper.
June 29th The Portsmouth Music Lovers Club hear a recital from Ivan Bowler, piano, and Miss Gladys Freeland, soprano.
October 6th At the Oddfellows hall, the Portsmouth Long Playing Record Club heard a talk by Mantovani who was publicising his latest record, more than 450 people attended.
October 21st The St Cecelia Singers were guests who entertained the Portsmouth Music Lovers Club at the Wesley Central Hall, and included Joan Reynolds, Florence Price, Dorothy Wassell, Reginald Wassell, John Ellison, and Joan Price.

1954

February 13th Saturday, The Portsmouth Music Club celebrates it's 12th Anniversary at the Lecture Hall of the Central Library with music from Annekate Friedlander pianoforte, and the St Cecelia singers, director Reginald Wassell.
March 17th The Portchester Singers, conducted by Mrs. Doris Matthews, entertained guests at the Portsmouth Music Club meeting at the Central Library Lecture Hall.
November 10th The Portsmouth music Club are entertained by the Paulsgrove Ladies Choir led by Laura Hall, and accompanied by Mrs Pound.
December 1st The Portsmouth Music Lovers Club hear a recital by the St Cecelia Singers including Reginald and Dorothy Wassell.

1955

February 5th Saturday, 13th Anniversary of the Portsmouth Music Club at the lecture hall of the Central Library. Songs from Reginald Wassell, Jean Brice with Ernest Zeffert on cello.
February 7th Portsmouth Music Lovers Club have a recital at their new headquarters 356 London Road North End.
June 15th The St Wilfred's Singers entertain at the Portsmouth Music Club meeting at the Central Library.
November 1st the Portsmouth Music Club meeting at the Lecture Hall in the Central Public Library heard from several local singers and performers including Ernest Barr violin and Stanley Matthews piano.

1956

February 7th The Portsmouth Music Club celebrate their 14th anniversary with a piano recital by Maurice Cole at the Central Library Lecture hall.
April 3rd The Portsmouth Irish Society gave a program of singing and dancing to the Portsmouth Music Club meeting at the Central Library Lecture Hall.
April 24th The St Wilfred's Singers entertained at the Anniversary Dinner of the Portsmouth Music Lovers Club at the RAFA Club, Cosham.

1957

September 4th Forty one members of the Portsmouth Music Club, who usually meet at the Lecture room of the Central Library, travel to the Albert Hall London for the Promenade Concerts.
September 18th For the 390th time the Portsmouth Music Club meet, now at the Lecture Room in the Central Library.

1958

September 30th The Portsmouth Music Club meet at the Lecture Room of the Central Library.
November 27th The Portsmouth Music Club have an orchestral recital by the Portsmouth Teachers String Orchestra conducted by Reginald Wassell.
December 8th The Portsmouth Music Lovers Club meet and celebrate their 300th meeting.

1959

February 17th The 17th anniversary of the Portsmouth Music club coincided with it's 425th meeting, when they met at the Lecture hall of the central Library to hear a piano recital.
June 8th The Portsmouth Music Club have a concert in the Lecture Hall of the Central Library by the Portsmouth Teachers String Orchestra conducted by Reginald Wassell.
October 13th The Ernest Wyatt Long Play Record Club, Major Wyatt, presents a programme of stereo records at the Guildhall with guest speaker and leading orchestra conductor Stanley Black.
