The Rivals

There have been two groups who have used the name, The Rivals.

The Rivals 1 Above, left to right Roy Wells, Rod Watts, Tony Alton, Frederick Wildsmith, and the 1961 News feature. The first Rivals started around 1960 and first came to the notice of all with a performance on the Southern Television Programme "Home Grown". Also were featuired in the Portsmouth Evening News series of Beat groups in 1961 Known as Ricky Dean (Ron Rickwood) and the Rivals. Rodney Watts the lead guitarist then now plays keyboards in a couple of different bands, Fred the bass player passed away, I do not know where Tony Alton the rythmn guitarist is, Roy Wells the drummer also passed away very sad, a really excellent band. The Rivals 2 The Rivals on the old South Parade Pier, Southsea, around the early 1970's were Jim Foy, Gren Mayes...stand in drummer that night...and Alan Bishop Pete Light, Gary Cufley, Gren Mayes, Terry Lines, Alan Langworty. Pete Light, Gary Cufley, Gren Mayes, Terry Lines, Alan Langworty. Russ Mahoney,Terry Aldridge, John Walton, Andy Smith. Gren Mayes and Martin Keel on South Parade Pier Danny Rowlands, Gren Mayes, Pete Smith Terry Aldridge in 1988 Jock Wilson keyboards....George Allen bass ...Gren Mayes vocals...Trevor Price lead guitar...Malcolm Bailey drums.
