January 1st Harold Breeden's Orchestra provided the music for the Portsmouth Society of Yorkshiremen's Dinner-Dance

1938

November 23rd Billy Palmer and his Orchestra play at the Savoy Cafe for the Dockyard Ball.

1939

January 11th Wally Fry Orchestra at the Savoy Cafe, Southsea.
January 26th Mr Billy Palmer and his Savoy Band played for the Pimco Guild Ball.
March 10th A Demonstration of Modern Corsetry as an aid to Beauty Comfort and Health.
The British Sailors Society took over the Savoy building during the war to provide a hostel and cafe for the men of the Royal and Merchant Navies.
April 8th Venue for the Third HMS Iron Duke Reunion dinner at the Savoy Cafe.

1944

February 6th At the Savoy Café, Fairway Follies in a grand variety Show. Wilfred Hubbard(card wizard), Lillian Dunkley (pianist and entertainer), Alice Cotty(comedienne), Charles Harris(compère and humourist) and Elise Relpah at the piano.

1945

February 26th Dance at the Savoy Cafe.
November 22nd Portsmouth Football Club Dinner with entertainment from Elsie Bonner, Maurice Colleano, Deveen and his Band, Jimmy Elliott, Le Roy Trio, Adele, Kathleen Bell, L R Kingston & partner.
Many well known guest band appearances at the Savoy Ballroom during 1945.

1946

January 19th, Saturday, The Savoy Ballroom changes hands, and is bought by Billy Butlin, it will be modernised and re-opened.
May 29th British Sailors Society Guild hold a tea dance at the Savoy Café.

1947

August 1st The Savoy Ballroom re-opens with Nat Gonella and his Georgians with Hal Vincent plus Tito Burns and his Accordion Club with Ray Ellington and Terry Ann Foster.
August 22nd Grand Bathing Beauty Contest at the Savoy, £10 in prize money, the famous Jimmy Handley is a judge!.
August 30th Saturday, Grand farewell night at the Savoy Ballroom to Nat Gonella and Tito Burns.
September 1st At the Savoy Ballroom Tommy Sampson and his 18 piece Orchestra now in residency.
September 5th At the Savoy Restaurant and Cafe the Arthur Read Quintet play afternoons and evenings.
November 10th at the Savoy Ballroom, Harry Parry and his Sextet with Jean Bradbury, plus Allan Young and his Organtones every evening.
November 19th Former catering manager of the Savoy Restaurant, Stanley Hubert Palmer is remanded on bail charged with embezzlement.

1948

January 1st At the Savoy, Allan Green and his Savoy band plus Allan Young and his Organtones.
January 8th The former catering manager of the Savoy Restaurant, Stanley Herbert Palmer, is given a six month jail sentence for stealing and fraud.
January 15th At the Savoy ballroom, Portsmouth v Bournemouth in the British Amateur Dance teams championship. Portsmouth are top of the league.
January 22nd At the Savoy Portsmouth and Preston Supporters welcomed to pre cup tie dance with Alan Green and his Savoy Band and Johnny Lyne and his Music.
January 28th At the Savoy for one night only, Harry Davidson and his famous BBC broadcasting Orchestra play for dancing.
February 20th For one night only at the Savoy Ballroom, Eric Winstone and his 17 piece Orchestra.

1950s rock star Vince Eagar backed by the Playboys began an attempted comeback at the Savoy with his new manager Mr Peter Sopp, a former post office worker who still lived in Portsmouth.
Manager George Turner reported that the Savoy was returning to “strict tempo dancing” although he presented Mick Mulligan’s Band with “blues singer” George Melly.
Dutch rock & roll band the Flee-Rekkers appeared at the Savoy in May.
“Britain’s Number 1 Jive Group” the Flee-Rekkers visited the Savoy again.

Peppi & the Twisters from New York played the Savoy, along with a demonstration of the new dance and a new film Twist Around the Clock starring Chubby Checker, the Marcels and Dion opened at the Gaumont. Not everyone enjoyed the new dance as “twist expert” Tony Greenslade was taken to hospital on a stretcher from the Savoy after “twisting his back”.
Local groups were appearing more regularly at the Savoy as support to somewhat obscure ‘London’ groups such as Phil Fernando & his Rock Group, Johnny Milton & the Condors, Grant Tracey & the Sunsets and Johnny Vallance & the Dee Jays.
17-year-old Tony Orlando brought his Package Show to the Savoy with the Ravens and the Fleetwoods.

Portsmouth had a new delight on the following (Saturday) morning as the Savoy launched its Junior Rock & Twist Club with groups like the Teenbeats, Southerners, Storms and Confidentials (1/- and parents free).

The Savoy also featured British pop stars like Eden Kane, Marty Wilde, Kenny Lynch, Peter Jay & the Jaywalkers, the King Brothers, the Spotnicks, Mike Berry and the Brook Brothers supported by local groups like the Vigilantes, the Dynamos, the Rivals or the Fleetwoods.
March 31, 2013 Tonight, for one night only. Pompey’s TOP Rock & Rollers FRANK KELLY & the HUNTERS at the Savoy Ballroom.
March 1963 opened with a “Dancer’s Rendezvous” at the Savoy featured Benny Freedman & his Orchestra and the John Barry Seven starred at the same venue, followed by Peppi & the New York Twisters.
Chris Montez remained in Portsmouth after his Guildhall visit and appeared at the Savoy on that Monday and Spinner was more positive about this performance, suggesting that in the ballroom his “direct attacking singing met with approval” because “the dancers like hard and beaty music”.
At the foot of the Evening News page was a small piece “Trad band at Savoy”, informing readers that the Clyde Valley Stompers were playing that evening, with a Saturday morning “Teenbeat” session.
It also mentioned briefly “on Sunday the Beatles would make their first appearance at the Savoy, supported by Mike Devon & the Diplomats”.
The evening ran from 7.30-11.45pm and entry was 5/-.
Ringo had a drum problem and borrowed the Diplomats’ kit – not quite as simple as it might sound since the Savoy had two stages and for the Beatles set they had to carry the kit across the ballroom, set up and then take it back for Diplomats drummer Terry Wiseman to play the final set of the evening. George Turner, recognising the Beatle’s promise some months before, paid a fee of just £50!
Johnny Dankworth, Gerry & the Pacemakers and Tommy Bruce & the Bruisers returned to the Savoy plus the Hollies, just ahead of their first hit “Searchin’”.

1964

The Savoy was now focusing far more on pop singers and beat groups including Brian Poole & the Tremeloes, the Tornadoes, Eden Kane, the Barron Knights and various Liverpudlians including the Undertakers, the Kubas, Lee Curtis and the Chants.
Active local groups included the Dynamos, the Strollers, the Diplomats and Chris Ryder & the Southern Sounds.
The Savoy had a busy ‘beat’ weekend with Peter Jay & the Jaywalkers, Tommy Bruce & the Bruisers and Paul Raven with the Twilights. Cliff Bennett & the Rebel Rousers at the Savoy.
Local beat group the Storms were at the Savoy followed by the Migil Five.

August 1964 and the Savoy featured Mike Daniels’ 14-Piece Showband on Saturday, the Mouquettes on Sunday and three bands including the Vibratones on Monday.

On Friday 14 August, the Kinks were at the Savoy with Portsmouth’s Sherlock & the Saints (5/-), and the Challengers.
As the summer drew towards a close, the Savoy continued to feature mainstream beat and pop groups including the Swinging Blue Jeans, the Nashville Teens, Wayne Fontana & the Mindbenders, Sounds Incorporated, the Honeycombs, the Seekers, the Roulettes, the Cherokees and all-girl group the Beatchicks, while local support acts included the Residents and the Strollers and The Southern Sounds.
Herman’s Hermits came to the Savoy.
On 4 November 1964 the Savoy hosted a charity night Old Time Music Hall hosted by local businessman GA Day and attended by the Lord Mayor, Lady Mayoress and many of the city’s great and good – all in appropriate costumes.
Gonks were a newly fashionable cuddly toy and a group of the same name played the Savoy.
Former Searcher Tony Jackson brought his new group the Vibrations to the Savoy Ballroom in mid-November.
On Friday 27 November 1964 the Hollies were at the Savoy.

The Savoy ran a “Five Counties” talent contest for regional groups with a prize of £100 and a recording audition.
The local bands who won through the heats and semi-finals were the Bipeds, Karl & the Rapiers, Force Four and Gosport’s Brothers Scarlett with Gary and Lee.
The latter won first prize, with Clive Shane & the Avengers runners-up and Karl & the Rapiers third and the event enjoyed comprehensive coverage in the Evening News.

1965

The Savoy continued to feature Palais Dancing on Saturday nights.
The Cherokees and the Brothers Scarlett played the Savoy.
Brothers Scarlett an experienced and entertaining group started 1965 with victory in the Savoy’s “Five Counties” competition. The Fenmen played the Savoy.
The Tea-Pots began playing regularly at the Savoy.
The Savoy hosted the week’s final event with the Beatmen and the Wackers (from Wales).
The Eric Delaney Big Band visited the Savoy.
The Klimaks appeared at the Savoy.
By contrast, the Savoy reverted frequently to traditional big band dancing in 1965 with fewer top pop acts but they enjoyed some successful events, starting with the Animals in late March, Tom Jones & the Squires one week later, then the Hollies.
The Tea-Pots were residents on Sunday evenings.
The Savoy welcomed back Eden Kane.
In May the Searchers played the Savoy.
Heinz & the Wild Ones were at the Savoy.
The Savoy had been pursuing a relatively traditional weekend path during this exciting summer for the rhythm & blues, soul and folk scenes but now that venue joined in on Monday nights, starting with Georgie Fame followed by bookings for Goldie & the Gingerbreads, the Four Pennies, the Yardbirds, Unit 4 plus 2 and the Moody Blues.

Jimmy James & the Vagabonds returned in July as part of a four-day Birdcage “Festival” which featured the Shevells on Thursday, Ronnie Jones on Friday, and the Who with support act the Crow on Sunday - a major event attended by 1000 fans in Southsea’s Savoy Ballroom on 11th July 1965.
The Yardbirds played the Savoy with the Klimaks to a large audience.
July 1965 ended with Van Morrison and Them at the Savoy, followed by the newly named Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich featuring a comedy routine.
BBC DJ Alan Freeman presented “Spin-a-Disc” at the Savoy, Zoot Money’s Big Roll Band appeared there, and a week later the Animals.
As the autumn of 1965 approached, the Who played a Sunday at the Savoy, while Steam Packet played another Savoy Monday night, although their experiment with top contemporary names was not destined to last.
Wednesday saw a special football night at the Savoy as part of Jimmy Dickinson’s Testimonial.
Friday saw Billy Fury and the Gamblers at the Savoy.
The Zombies visited the Savoy.

1966

There was little of note at the Savoy Ballroom.
the Savoy was far quieter than a few years earlier.
The College of Technology students ran an end-of-year jazz “Steamboat Shuffle” and a “Final Fling” at the Savoy with the Mojos, Bryan Hug Fraternity and the Third Dimension.
The Savoy reintroduced pop on 24 June 1966 with the Quotations and the Moments.
The Savoy increased pop bookings with the Koobas, Roulettes, Fortunes and Birds.
Billy Fury and Pinkerton’s Assorted Colours were at the Savoy.
The students presented an early Christmas Dance at the Savoy with ‘modern’ Tubby Hayes and ‘trad’ Bob Wallis Storyville Jazzmen.
The Herd appeared at the Savoy.
The Blackouts were at the Savoy.
The Raisins and the Southern Sounds were at the Savoy on 23 December.

1967

Students held a folk gig at the Savoy with Dorris Henderson, Johnny Silvo, 3 City 4, and College Folk.
the Savoy offered record sessions of a more contemporary kind.
March 21st Simon Dupree + the Big Sound The Courtelles Inspiration an event called “Heatrave.”

The Savoy promoted a Charity night on Thursday 13 June featuring no less than twelve groups and two lightshows.
The main acts were RCA recording band Skip Bifferty, the Mojos and the (British) Amboy Dukes.
June 26th Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich plus Wild Angels, Rivers Invitation, Brother Bung, and Light Emporium provided entertainment for a 'Six Twenty' Dance. It was one of the last nights of the Savoy Ballroom.
