Richard Whichello, 75, a resident of Pine View Commons, Johnstown, N. Y. , entered into eternal life on Monday, April 28, 2008 at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville N. Y. , where he had been a patient since April 15th. He was born on April 9, 1933 in Portsmouth, England, the son of Richard H. and Doris L. Clark Whichello. He graduated from high school in Portsmouth, England and came to the U. S. in 1982.
Ricky was an accomplished musician and composer and proudly played for the British Army Band from 1951 - 1955 and recorded with the BBC. He was a member of the Musicians Union in Portsmouth, England and was the founder of the headlining “Dick Whichello Band” and the co-founder of the “Thompson-Whichello Band” who played with the likes of Cilla Black and also performed on various cruise lines. In the U. S. , he was invited to play for the Plattsburgh State Symphonic Band, taught music at Mount Assumption Institute Catholic High School in Plattsburgh and performed with the Plattsburgh “Strawhatters. ” His compositions were played throughout upstate N. Y. Yet, his most treasured works were those written for his daughters, who survive, Tara Jackson of Norfolk, Va. and Therese Whichello of Albany, N. Y.
He is also survived by six sons, Martyn, Michael, Ian, Duncan, Trevor and Gavin Whichello, who reside in England. Also surviving are two brothers, Robin and Trevor Whichello. “We love you up to the sky and back again Daddy. ” A memorial mass will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 1 N. Market St. , Johnstown, N. Y. on Wednesday, April 30th at 7 p. m. Cremation will take place at Leatherstocking Crematory, Cherry Valley, N. Y. and his remains will be returned to England, for as he said, “I live in the U. S. , but my heart will always be in England. ” Arrangements are by the Ehle Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a music program or choir of your choice.

So why are The Racketeers here? guitarist Chello, is really Michael Whichello, son of Ricky. So, Michael is the third generation of a Portsmouth musicians family.
