Pizza on the Park, 8th June 1999

with Andy McBride on drums

Gerard had drummer Andy McBride helping out at the POTP and Gerard made the evening swing as always. Starting with a couple of great songs, 'I'll go my way by myself' and then 'There'll be some changes made', he then went into the song 'Too Young' but change many of the words and dedicated it to Jenny in celebration of their 1st wedding anniversary and then added 'Love is lovelier the second time around'.
Then came songs from the new musical Gerard and Drey Shepherd are writing called, 'One more turn'. First song was 'I danced with Marilyn Munroe' followed by Jenny's favourite '8 o'clock blues' and the slightly odd 'Ode to the dance belt'. Next were a few songs that I've not heard Gerard play before, 'As time goes by', then a brief snatch of 'Always look on the bright side', followed by 'That'll do Babe', from the movie of the same name.
'The best is yet to come,' was ironically followed by Gerard having to draw the raffle, and I didn't win!
Finally, a song that surprised me and it was dedicated to his youngest, Gordon, 'I believe I can fly'. Certainly the sentiment in the song is the sort that Gerard likes, but something so recent is a little unusual, but beautifully performed.
In the break I overheard Gerard saying to drummer Andy as they heartily tucked into a pizza, "After two weeks here you'll be sick of the sight of pizza!"
In the second half, more of Gerard's show songs, 'Attention' and 'Here I am', from An American in London. Then from the new Chicago musical, 'All that jazz'.
After the Billie Holiday songs, 'God bless the child' and then 'Make believe' Gerard sung his version of Sedaka's 'Breaking up is hard to do', brilliantly.
Next came a few requests from the floor, 'On this Earth', then an Englebert Humperdink song 'This moment in time', and 'I got a crush on you'. Fantasy was followed by his final song 'New York New York', with the popper and sirens, mainly from Rosie and her Rosettes!
Another great night of Gerard's beautiful music.
More please Gerard!
