29th. September 2007. GERARD KENNY at The Village Hall, Hartfield, East Sussex.

GerardGerard returned to his adopted home village of Hartfield, a very short commute as he said, for a show to add more monies to the village hall refurbishment fund. A packed hall heard a short Hartfield history lesson in song, as Gerard started with melodies from the turn of the 20th century,
"The village hall has been handed down to us", was a parody to the tune "London Town".
"Shine on harvest moon", and "You made me love you" and then "When Irish eyes are smiling" from the early 1900's.
Then from the 1920's "Whos sorry now" and"It had to be you" followed by the war years "Someone to watch over me" and "A nightingale sang in Berkerley Square" "All of me", yet another parody written especially for the other 'Jenny' in his life.
Next came a classic from the Musical Chicago, "All I care about is love" and then that 'nice little earner' "I could be so good for you" To round off the first half Gerard sang "That's what friends are for" and had the whole room singing with him.
Next came the buffet and the raffle which was not without incident, not to be recorded here!
The second half began with another Chicago classic "All that jazz".
Gerard played the start of a well known song and challenged anyone to name the song, no one did, it was "Never the less" "I left my heart in San Francisco" was a request followed by his theme song "New York New York".
Delving back into the mists of time he sang, "Ain't she sweet" next by total contrast was "Johnny B Goode" and then another contrast "A Ragtime tune".
Gerard returned to his Doo Wop days for "Tears on my pillow" and "Every time we say goodbye".
Two English songs next and we all joined in "We'll meet again" and "I'll be seeing you".
Then came a new one on me, a beautiful melody, but such a strange lyric to "Love in a mist" a Paddy Roberts song. "There'll always be a Hartfield", to the tune of "There'll always be an England" rounded off the evening, and the crowd almost lifted the precious roof off.
and for his enchore he sang "Smile"
The evening finished at about 10.15pm ! a little early I thought, but I did have another long drive home, and many thoughts and hopes of the next show. If he had played all night,??? I would have stayed all night!
