GERARD KENNY at the Tivoli Theatre, Wimbourne, 19th December 1998.

It had be too long, over a year since I had last heard Gerard play and met him and Jenny. So I drove down to Wimbourne as eagerly as I would if Pompey were playing at Wembley. Gerard had finally got back to Wimbourne after a few previous problems. His hair is longer(I'm not jealous!) and looked slightly blond, possibly with all the sun he's getting on the cruises. He kicked off with his familiar starter, 'I am a singer', and then 'Where or when'. He said this was the first he had ever played in public as a young lad in Long Island. He dedicated 'Our love is here to stay', to his new wife Jenny. Next came one of my utmost favourites, 'Fantasy'. All of Gerard's songs are brilliant, some are more brilliant than others! but I may be just a little biased.
'The Entertainer' came next with a few variations that improved the original.
'She's Perfect' comes from the new musical he and Drey Shepherd have been working on. This was another song for Jenny.
Of the newer songs, 'Chocolate' is a great fun song, sung to perfection. He said it was his 'drug song for the millennium'.
Gerard announced, 'The best is yet to come', as a Frank Sinatra song, and sung it better than Sinatra.
A song from Harry Neilson's 'Schmilson' album, 'Never the less' was followed by 'New York New York', and the air was filled with Rosie's poppers!
Gerard started the second half with 'I could be so good for you' and then 'The other woman the other man'. then Pete Murray's request 'Georgia'.
Throughout the show, Gerard's regular band had worked hard and sounded great as always, but 'I have dreamed' was played and sung as a solo. Next came a number of requested songs, 'Son of a song and dance man', and then a song I have never liked until now, 'Lady in red' a great and unusual arrangement and Gerard, brought this song to life.
'You got that thing' is another fun song which had many feet tapping and much applause at the end.
'Do I love you', is another song I love and it was sweetly segued together with 'Night and day'.
Gerard's version of the Otis Redding version of 'Try a little tenderness', rocked along very nicely.
'I finally got it right', is a song that sums up a few of Gerad's recent problems, and left me with that warm glow.
The one and only Christmas song of the night was 'Chestnuts roasting on an open fire' although it was announced at 'Children roasting on an open fire!'. After the first encore Gerard played 'I made it through the rain' and then after a second encore, Gerard's final rocker was Johnny B Goode and had the theatre on their feet and dancing. Gerard made the well sprung piano stool bounce!
Throughout the evening Gerard played many new songs and songs new to his show, his voice was excellent, his style perfect and with total sincerity.
