POMPEY SONGS???

Dain Tain

(to the tune of Down Town? Sung with a Pompey accent!)
If you’ve watched too much TV, and you fancy a Mac D
You can always go….dain tain
Feel like some action, and some local attractions
That’s the place to go….dain tain
Just listen to the music of the pub band rock & rollers
Down a good few lagers.. ‘fore some dude knocks out your molars
How can you lose?
Your lights go out faster there
You can forget all your troubles..say a few prayers
When you’re ….dain tain
Great with your mates, to be….dain tain
I’m sure that you’ll agree….dain tain
Albert Road’s waiting for you

Dave Culver - I’d rather be in Fratton than Manhatan. - I’d rather be in Fratton -

Well I've been to New York City, where the neon lights are pretty,
I've walked the streets of Brooklyn, and Times Square,
I've been to Central Park, I've seen Broadway after dark,
But Pompey to New York just can't compare.
I'd rather stay in Milton, than in the New York Hilton,
I'd rather be in North End with my friends,
Yes Pompey you're the best, I can leave all the rest,
It's Albert Road where night life never ends.

I'd rather be in Fratton than Manhattan,
I'd rather be in Pompey by the sea,
You can keep your Empire State,
‘Cause our Spinnaker is great,
Portsmouth you're the only place for me.
I'd rather be in Fratton than Manhattan,
I'd rather be in Southsea than New York.
You can keep your Staten Island,
I'd rather be in my land,
I much prefer the way the people talk.

We got forts out on the Solent, to fight off an opponent,
We got ships to keep the enemy at bey,
There’s ferries day and night,
To the lovely Isle of Wight,
And Fratton Park where good old Pompey play,
To the life upon the seas when you go to Gun Wharf Keys,
There’s a Dockyard that is full of history,
See the Navy of the past, when you gaze up at the mast,
At the home of Nelson's ship the Victory.

Take a walk around the Guildhall,
Or sit down at the Hot Walls,
There’s a castle built by Henry the eight,
Or ride on Landport corner,
Charles Dickens, he was born here,
There’s always things to do at Canoe Lake.
You can keep your Hudson River,
The ice will make you shiver,
Don’t mention 42nd Street to me,
It's Pompey on the coast,
Where the sun shines the most,
Portsmouth is the place I'll always be.

Portsmouth tea - - Portsmouth tea -

Everybody likes a cup of tea
Everybody likes a cup of tea
Well I like mine piping hot,
And make sure you warm the pot
Don’t be giving a luke warm tea to me
Got to be a steaming cup of tea

Found a place that blends it down the road
Yea there’s a place that blends it down the road,
For hard water that’s poor
They’ve come up with a cure
The things they’ve done to make it right you’ll see
And that’s what makes a great cup of tea.

And so I’m drinking some Portsmouth tea
Won’t you take a cup with me?
You’ll see what the fuss is all about.
And when I’m taking some quiet time
Forget the beer forget the wine,
It’s Portsmouth tea that I’ll be pouring out. --- solo

There are many things that I could live without
But I can’t lie, tea isn’t one of them

And so I’m drinking some Portsmouth tea
Won’t you take a cup with me?
You’ll see what the fuss is all about.
And when I’m taking some quiet time
Forget the beer forget the wine,
It’s Portsmouth tea that I’ll be pouring out.

So raise you cups and mugs to Portsmouth tea
So raise you cups and mugs to Portsmouth tea
Cause it’s great to see a tea that’s been blended locally,
And tastes as good as any tea can be
Gotta love a drink of Portsmouth Tea

And so I’m drinking some Portsmouth tea
Won’t you take a cup with me?
You’ll see what the fuss is all about.
Everybody likes a cup of tea

Pompey Princess - - Pompey Princess -
She was born and raised up in this English City
down here on the south coast home of the British Navy
but she don't love the Sailor boys in case you ain't guessed
my pretty baby she's a Pompey Princess
Portsmouth City Girls School taught this fine Pompey lass
about how much she could hope for growing up working class
they'll be few airs and graces she'd be the first to confess
and laugh out loud about how she's a Pompey Princess
COME ALONG PRETTY BABY AND SAY YOU'LL BE MINE
LET'S GO DOWN TO THE GUILDHALL THOSE PAPERS TO SIGN
IF YOU'LL JUST WRITE YOUR NAME HERE ALONG THE DOTTED LINE
THERE'LL BE WEDDING BELLS RINGING OUT AMONG THE POMPEY CHIMES
She's works a part time job in a shop down in the town
and she likes to go out dancing when Friday night comes around
she'll put on her make up and a cheap little dress
and fix her hair up pretty like a Pompey Princess
Yes she likes to dress all girlie in pinks and in red
she's got a girlie bedroom to you know with teddy bears on her bed
clothes and jewellery scattered all around sometimes it sure is a mess
but they're ain't no maids in waiting when you're a Pompey Princess
She tells me all about her girlfriends and the boys she liked sometimes
she tells me 'bout crazy things that she's done and she asks if I mind
nothing that's ever gone before though could make me love her any less
if I think about the future with a Pompey Princess
You see I've searched far and wide trying to find me my girl
and I've met fancy Ladies in diamonds and pearls
but I'm coming home now and I sure do feel blessed
to know that waiting there for me is a Pompey Princess

PORTSMOUTH TOWN - A ROLLICKING SEA PIECE - 1927 Colour-2 PORTSMOUTH TOWN - A ROLLICKING SEA PIECE - 1927 Colour-3

"Portsmouth Town, a Rollicking Sea Piece by Evan Marsden."
A genuine Vintage music sheet with an illustrated cover, published in London by JH Larway.
A delightfully innocent cover illustration for a delightfully innocent piano composition, the composer suggesting "To enjoy this rollicking sea-piece one should forget the present and conjure to the mind those romantic times when the Sailing Ship was Lord of the Sea....."
It comes as a bit of a shock, then, to discover that Evan Marsden, one of several pseudonyms used by Eric Mareo, was in fact a convicted murderer! It is a sad tale involving two lesbian dancers in New Zealand. Both members of the Ernest Rolls Revue, Freda Stark fell in love with Thelma Trott.
The latter made the mistake of marrying the conductor, Eric Mareo in 1933, and two years later she died from an unexplained overdose of the drug Veronal. Mareo was tried twice, and found guilty of murder on both occasions, though his death sentence was commuted to 12 years in prison. mareo died in 1960.
